Notre histoire.
Laurent Hassoun a créé Roadrunner Custom Guitars à Nancy en 1994. Il développe et fabrique des guitares (solidbodies, archtops, lapsteels, ukeleles,acoustiques...), basses, resophonics, effets, amplis, micros et pièces custom. Un artisan “Old School”, une petite visite à son atelier, c'est comme faire un pas dans un passé récent ou un univers parallèle. L’artisanat, la créativité et la passion pour son noble métier font qu’on peut le retrouver en train d’opiner avec enthousiasme sur une nouvelle idée de sculpture, de fontes métalliques, d’incrustations de nacre, monter des pédales fuzz et autres dans des boîtes de jambon – en fait, tout ce qu’il peut récupérer et utiliser pour sortir ce son qu’il a dans la tête le tout avec un look très cool...
Le respect de l’histoire nous impose de relater qu’en 1994, l’autre identité de Laurent - Stanley -, musicien « en opération », l’a amené à développer sa première fuzz, la "Supersonic".
Laurent jouait de la guitare et de la basse depuis quelques années déjà, avec les “légendaires” Squares , (plusieurs albums pour des labels européens et américains, Hangman, Mojo, Estrus, Royal Records…enregistrés au Red Studio et à Toe Rag ).
Lors d'une tournée en Angleterre, Laurent et son partenaire de crime, Nick Normal, se lamentaient sur le manque d'une fuzz puissante qu'ils pourraient utiliser pour épater les rosbifs. Quand Laurent a informé son pote que son prochain tour de magie serait de faire apparaître cette fuzz devant leurs propres yeux ébahis, Nick a répondu avec un manque de vision historique à la Chamberlain : "Ben, je vois pas qui ça pourrait intéresser à part nous !".
Malheureusement nous n'avons pas l'avis de Monsieur Normal quand il a vu Billy Gibbons de ZZ Top en 1997, à la télé française en "direct live prime time" avec une des ces "Supersonic", ce qui a ouvert la voie aux exportations des "œuvres" de Roadrunner.
La carrière parallèle de Laurent a toujours influencé les guitares et les effets qu'il fabrique.
Il a démarré avec l'idée de produire des guitares au look 60’s, avec des modèles comme la "Big Square" et la "Shark" que lui-même ou des musiciens qu'il fréquentait, comme Billy Childish, auraient voulu jouer.
En 1996, il s'est dit "Pourquoi ne pas aller montrer cette guitare à Bo Diddley ?! ”, qui jouait dans un festival à proximité.
Laurent laissa quelques dépliants dans les loges de Bo, et attendit dehors à une distance raisonnablement dictée par la sagesse. Le cri enthousiaste de Bo – "Où est le fils de p??? qui a fabriqué cette gratte ?"- fendit la nuit lorraine et Roadrunner avait un nouveau client pour ses "Big Square".
La plupart des guitares fabriquées entre 1994 et 1999 étaient des solidbodies et des thinlines.
Le succès de la Supersonic Fuzz a incité Laurent à sortir un tremolo, "Dr Freeze", et la "Flexitone" Q-Filter+distortion".
Des musiciens tels que Money Mark-Beastie Boys, G Love…-, Lee Ranaldo-Sonic Youth, Billy Childish, Les Wampas, Sanseverino, Axel Bauer, Shanka-No One is innocent, Parabellum, Silmarils et bien d’autres encore, ont rejoint Bo Diddley et B. Gibbons en utilisant des productions Roadrunner.
Plus récemment Ben Harper, Heavy Trash, The Kills ont aussi montré un certain intérêt pour les productions Roadrunner.
En 2001, Laurent a commencé à fabriquer ses propres pièces pour ses guitares archtop, se rendant compte que certaines de ses conceptions étaient bien trop spécifiques pour que des pièces standard fonctionnent. Cette idée est devenue une base pour Roadrunner – innover et créer pour aider les guitaristes à obtenir exactement le son et l’esthétique qu'ils désirent. Les instruments sont montés avec des micros haut de gamme tels que Joe Barden, Bare Knuckle, Delano, Rio Grande et TV Jones mais aussi avec des micros développés en collaboration avec Benedetti, aux spécificités "graphiques" et phoniques incroyables.
Toujours musicien et producteur actif - avec Thundercrack, Boss Monkey, Rich Deluxe & the Remedial School Orchestra -, il a co-fondé avec King Automatic et Rich Deluxe, le label Bang ! Bang ! Mighty Shots, pour travailler avec le même enthousiasme comme arrangeur et comme producteur.
L’objectif est d’utiliser ses talents d’artisan, ses connaissances et son expérience pour fournir un service complet, offrant des beaux instruments taillés sur mesure avec des pièces custom, des amplis et des micros qui vont parfaitement ensemble, pour trouver exactement le son recherché.
Tous les instruments et pièces Roadrunner sont faites main, testées à l’atelier, dans une recherche de qualité qui implique que seul des éléments et composants de haut de gamme sont utilisés pour ces créations.

Our story.
Laurent Hassoun became Mr Roadrunner Guitars in 1994 when he created his company in Nancy, France. Laurent develops and makes custom guitars (solid body, archtop, lapsteel, ukeleles...), basses, resophonics, effects, amps, mikes and custom parts because he has a sound buzzing in his head which he wants to bring it out and share it around. A true old-school artisan, a visit to Laurent’s workshop is like a step into a recent past or parallel universe where craftsmanship, creativity and passion for his noble calling mean you may find him enthusing about a new idea for sculpture, metal forging, pearl inlays, cool fuzz pedals made out of triangular ham tins – just about anything in fact that he can find and use to get that sound he can almost see in his head out into the “real” world. And make it look cool to boot.
History compels us to relate that in 1994 Laurent’s other identity as a touring musician lead him to develop his first Fuzz, the Supersonic. Laurent had been playing guitar and bass for a few years with the “legendary” Squares who made several LPs for European and American labels (Hangman, Estrus, Royal Records…) in studios like Toe Rag and Red Studio. While on tour in the UK, Laurent and his partner in garage rock crime, Nick Normal, found themselves bemoaning the lack of a really kicking fuzz pedal they could use to blow away the punters. When Laurent informed his chum that for his next trick he would make the very fuzz they wanted appear before their very eyes, Nick replied, with a Chamberlain-esque lack of historical vision, “I can’t see who that would interest except us”. A quote is not available from Mr. Normal regarding the later appearance by Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top on live prime-time French TV with one of Laurent’s Supersonic Fuzz pedals which opened the way for important export success.
Laurent’s parallel career as a musician has always informed the guitars and effects he makes. He began with the idea of producing 60s-style guitars like his Big Square and Shark models which he and the musicians he knew like Billy Childish wanted to play. In 1996, he thought “why don’t I go and show this guitar to Bo Diddley ?” who was playing a festival nearby. Laurent left a couple of brochures in Bo’s dressing room and waited outside the door, lighting the blue touch paper and retreating to a safe distance as it were. Bo’s enthusiastic cry of “where is the m….f…. who made this guitar ?” rang out into the Lorraine night and Laurent had a new customer for his Big Square guitar. Roadrunner was mostly making solidbody and thinline guitars from 1994 to 1999 and the success of the Supersonic Fuzz lead Laurent to bring out his kicking Dr Freeze tremolo and his Flexitone Q-Filter Wah-wah among other effects. Musicians such as Money Mark, Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Billy Childish and the French groups Wampas, Sanseverino and Silmarils joined Bo Diddley and Gibbons in using Roadrunner products.
Around 2003, Laurent began to make his own parts for his guitars because he realized that certain of his designs were too specific for standard parts to work on them. This has become an integral part of the Roadrunner credo – innovating to help muscians bring out the sound in their heads. Laurent uses Joe Bardem, Bare Knuckle and TV Jones mikes but has also developed mikes himself in collaboration with Benedetti, giving specifications and input on the mikes he then uses.
He is still an active musician and producer; currently playing and touring in Thundercrack, Boss Monkey, Rich Deluxe Remedial School Orchestra and has co-founded the Mighty Shots label where he works with just as much enthusiasm on arrangements and production. This other side to Laurent’s life means he can really offer “custom” advice as well to help other musicians bring out the sound they know is somewhere just around a corner in their heads. His aim is to use his craftsmanship, knowledge and experience to provide a full service to musicians, offering beautifully crafted instruments with fully hand-made parts, amps and mikes that fit together perfectly. All Roadrunner Guitars’ products and parts are hand-made and thoroughly tested in house and Laurent insists upon only using highest quality parts and components for his creations.
